Celebrating Earth Day with a walk through the Island's forest
par Toula FoscolosThe walk took place on Sunday, April 22, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and was led by Green Party candidate and I.D.S. resident, Serge Bellemare, as well as Lise Couture, founder of the walking group "Marchons dans l'Ile".
The people present were of all ages and all ethnic backgrounds, with one common goal: to spend a morning taking in Mother Nature's beauty and celebrate a day that commemorates it. Speaking French, English and Spanish, the participants (some from Argentina, Iran and Haiti) walked along the forest trails, taking in the forest's flora and fauna.
The weather was glorious and made it easy for participants to take their time during the leisurely walk and observe spring blooming in the forest, while spotting a heron, a tortoise and a couple of ducks along the way.
Of course, the walk was just one more opportunity to take in the world's natural beauty and remind everyone of how vulnerable everything is and how it relies on us.
"Even if one puts aside the whole 'Save the Planet' issue, the lifestyle promoted by environmentalists is definitely a more humane way to co-exist on this planet," explained Marchons dans l'Ile member, Green Party candidate and Island resident, Serge Bellemare. How true indeed!
